BA Schools suspend partner: Officials say that the business owner used a program's e-mail directory for political purposes.

(Tulsa World (OK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Nov. 14--A Broken Arrow business and its owner are suspended from participating in Broken Arrow Public Schools' Partners in Education program after using the program's e-mail directory to send out information on a grand jury petition.

John Lare, owner of Taco Mayo restaurants in Broken Arrow and Coweta, received a letter from interim Superintendent Gary Gerber stating his participation in the program was no longer desired because he used the e-mail addresses for political purposes.

Lare began circulating a petition last month which seeks to convene a grand jury to investigate three school board members: Maryanne Flippo, Sharon Whelpley and Shari Wilkins on the grounds of willful neglect, maladministration and gross partiality in office.

He has about 2,000 signatures already and has until Dec. 5 to collect a total of 5,000 signatures of registered Tulsa County voters.

His e-mail to other Partners in Education requested that business owners allow employees to sign the petition and attached a copy of the petition.

Lare has been a Partner in Education for almost 13 years and said his suspension

won't affect him, but it will affect Westwood Elementary and Haskell Middle schools, the sites his businesses assisted.

"He's not hurting me; he's hurting the students and teachers," he said.

Lare said his business has donated $4,000 to $5,000 in books and free meals to teachers and students, and Taco Mayo was named Partner of the Year two years ago.

According to an e-mail to program participants, Gerber said he had received complaints from other partners about the e-mail from Lare and the directory being used to solicit signatures.

When Lare sent a similar e-mail to partners stating he was circulating a petition to stop a proposed tax increment financing district in Broken Arrow, he heard no complaints and Gerber actually thanked him, Lare said.

This summer, Lare said, he plans to request permission from Gerber to be reinstated as a Partner in Education.
