Proofpoint's New Email Archiving Solution Works with Microsoft Outlook

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Proofpoint, a company that provides unified e-mail security, archiving and data loss prevention solutions, enhanced its Proofpoint Email Archiving solution with a new capability that allows mobile employees to utilize the archive search function directly from Microsoft (News - Alert) Outlook Web Access.

With this new feature, IT managers and e-mail end-users can locate important e-mail messages and attachments using any Web-enabled device supported by Outlook Web Access anytime anywhere, the company said.

Proofpoint Email Archiving is offered as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS (News - Alert)) hybrid e-mail archiving solution for the e-discovery, regulatory compliance and e-mail storage management.

The service does not require any client-side software, Proofpoint (News - Alert) said. It enables seamless integration with Outlook and enhances end-user search experience. The updated solution guarantees near real-time search results and delivers the highest level of security with Proofpoint's DoubleBlind Encryption.

The update has the facility to archive historical e-mail messages in a secure manner. These mails reside in Proofpoint's data center through Outlook Web Access, and users can search them anytime.

The Outlook Web Access integration also gives an optional facility by which users can get access to e-mail messages that have stubbed attachments. This facility allows customers to manage mailbox sizes by removing large attachments from Exchange while still keeping them easily accessible to Outlook Web Access users.

The new solution from Proofpoint finds relevance, especially when there is a revolutionary growth in the number of mobile workforce worldwide. Forrester Research revealed that mobile workers would make up 73 percent of the workforce by 2012, a news report said.

“Many of these employees will access corporate email while away from the office and companies must be prepared to manage archiving demands accordingly,” said Andres Kohn, vice president of technology for Proofpoint, in a statement. “When urgent issues arise, such as time-sensitive e-discovery and regulatory compliance issues, employees will need instant access to e-mail archives in order to meet those deadlines.”

Proofpoint Email Archiving is an ideal solution for any company running Microsoft Exchange 2000, 2003 or 2007 with Active Directory Server, the company said. Proofpoint’s e-mail security help many enterprises to stop spam, protect against e-mail viruses and prevent leaks of confidential information via e-mail and other network protocols.
