SMART Modular Technologies (

Alert) has released a new “rugged” version of its Xcel-10 solid state device.
SMART Modular Technologies is a provider of memory products, offering standard and custom products to top-tier OEMs in the computer, industrial, networking and telecommunications sectors.
The new SSD is designed specifically for defense and industrial applications where high shock, vibration, and temperature tolerances are on level with performance and reliability. Xcel-10 drive is optimized for random, small-block transfers typical of business applications and offers higher performance, higher reliability, and lower power operation, resulting in lower total cost of ownership as compared to hard disk drives.
The ruggedized version has a SATA 3Gb/s interface and can operate at temperatures ranging from -40 deg C to 85 deg C. It also features improved environmental specifications of 50g operating shock and 16.4g operating vibration. As the SSD is to be used in defense applications where data elimination important it is incorporated with ATA-7 security erase feature. Both Normal and Enhanced Security Erase modes are provided to eliminate all user data on the drive when activated.
Housed in a 2.5-inch form factor, the new SMART Xcel-10 SSD is available in capacities up to 128GB, and delivers 5,580 IOPS at 100 percent read or 980 IOPS at 67 percent read, 33 percent write, for random I/O using 4K block size which makes it ideal to deliver high performance in both sequential and random I/O applications.
Mark Dupaul, SMART’s senior product marketing manager has explained that since the SSD supports both high sequential performance – measured in MB/s – and random I/O performance – measured in IOPS – in a ruggedized package it is ideally suited for wide range of applications, including flight data recording and rugged laptops. The Xcel-10 now meets the needs of land, sea, and air-based applications that require greater environmental durability and increased data security.
