Japan's 3Di To Use Funding for PaaS, SaaS Market Work

Tokyo-based 3Di, which develops and offers 3D Internet products, has announced its intention to use newly-secured funding in order to enter the Platform as a Service and Software as a Service markets.

Company officials say they'll provide a 3Di platform and applications as services through cloud computing. With its recently-announced capital increase worth around $5 million, 3Di aims to expand its business offerings to include such PaaS/SaaS (News - Alert) services as a 3D conference system.

The company has generally focused on developing and selling 3Di OpenSim, its server software for the construction of 3D virtual worlds, and 3Di OpenViewer, viewer software embedded into HTML pages to view and interact with 3D virtual worlds in browsers.

OpenSim is an open source 3D Internet technology.

The company's pitching its cloud computing services as a way for businesses to deploy 3D virtual worlds "without needing to invest in their own hosting hardware infrastructure." The overall intent, as company officials say, is to "increase the adoption of 3D Internet technologies by enterprises."

Recently, TMC reported that 3Di, Inc. and were co-developing a VoIP solution designed for use in online 3D virtual worlds.

The commercially-oriented “3D VoIP solution” combines 3Di’s browser-based OpenSim Server Enterprise edition withSoftfront's SIP/VoIP technology.

Three-D virtual worlds such as Qwaq Forums or Nortel’s (News - Alert) web.alive are used for hosting virtual meetings, events or seminars.
