CaaS Week in Review

It was another huge week for communications-as-a-service (CaaS), and the industry itself saw a lot of movement this week. With new products and services to consider, and some big changes for some major firms in the sector, there's plenty of new information out there, and getting a handle on it all will make going into next week much easier. So with the weekend now at hand, it's a fine time to take a step back and get a wider view on the week that was, which is just what we'll do now with our Week in Review coverage!

First we had a look at CounterPath, who teamed up with ABP for the specific purpose of advancing VoIP softphone technology in the market. Since CounterPath (News - Alert)'s specialty is SIP-based VoIP phones—as well as the Bria line of mobility software--and ABP is a distributor for IP communications products, the two working together should prove an excellent opportunity to get a newer technology into the field. The combination of CounterPath's technology and ABP (News - Alert)'s network of distributors, including over 10,000 value-added resellers, makes this a terrific combination.

Next came a look at iCruise.com, who turned to 8x8 Virtual Office and Virtual Contact Center to help augment its cruise selling operations. With the new tools in place, iCruise.com could now offer a complete unified communications (UC) platform from which to offer its services. 8x8's slate of tools, according to iCruise.com, easily allowed the company to offer several new services to customers, like live agent chat systems and click-to-call mechanisms that make working with iCruise.com a much simpler exercise.

BroadSoft's BroadCloud SaaS platform brought in the next piece of news, landing the 2013 Unified Communications Excellence Award from Internet Telephony magazine. BroadSoft (News - Alert) landed the honors thanks to BroadCloud's overall level of innovation in the field, as well as BroadSoft's overall stance in the industry, including a “commitment to addressing the real needs of the marketplace.” BroadSoft has achieved recognition on several fronts this year so far, including being tapped to work with both Sprint and AudioCodes (News - Alert) on several projects.

Then we had a look at 3CLogic, who netted a $4.2 million prize in a round of series B funding. Backed up by a coalition of investors including Blu Venture Investors, the extra funding is set to give 3CLogic (News - Alert) extra fuel on which to spark growth. 3CLogic also brought in Robert Killory to serve as chief customer officer and was set to offer some significant new advancement for the company in the field of cloud-based contact center systems.

Finally, we took a look at the use of voice service in the cloud, and what should be considered before moving such systems to cloud-based models. A major move such as this should not be undertaken lightly, and several key points should be considered including what to look for from those who would offer cloud services, to where to find resources that will help best make a decision. A recently-announced webinar, titled “What to Look For When Moving Voice to the Cloud,” should prove helpful when it arrives July 9 at 2:00 EDT.

That was the week that was in CaaS, and there was certainly plenty going on in terms of companies getting together to better offer products and services, as well as new moves within the industry and even in its further consideration.
