Sophos Mobile Control 5 Simplifies Management of Employee Mobile Devices

April 17, 2015

Sophos recently announced the latest release of its mobile device management solution, Sophos Mobile Control 5 (SMC5). The new portal makes it easier for admins to configure security and access rights for every mobile device a user has.

Oxford, U.K.-based Sophos offers several different IT security solutions including antivirus, encryption and firewalls. The philosophy that went into simplifying mobile device management in SMC 5 is consistent with the company’s philosophy that the best way to address the complexities of IT is to avoid creating applications that are complex themselves.

In an enterprise IT environment that supports BYOD, a given employee may have a smartphone, laptop, desktop and tablet device that accesses the company network. According to Sophos, the typical access management solution available on the market today requires that each device be configured individually.

This process is redundant and can be highly prone to error. It makes it more likely that an employee with several devices could have varying access rights if admins inadvertently configure one device differently from the others. Multiply these redundant settings by tens or even hundreds of users and you have a configuration nightmare on your hands; especially if access rights for an entire department have to be modified.

Sophos simplifies the process by having access and security setup in such a way that access rights are applied uniformly across all devices for a specific user. This prevents the problem of one device being configured differently from others. Access management is agnostic as far as operating systems go; Android, iOS, and Windows Phone (News - Alert) are all supported.

While any business could benefit from it, small to medium businesses should especially consider a solution like SMC 5. These companies do not have the resources to manage BYOD policies and access rights for multiple users who each have multiple devices. Using a solution like SMC 5 will make assigning these rights much more manageable.
