Phase 2 Deploys IBM System x To Improve Datacenter Efficiency and Lower Energy Costs

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Phase 2 International, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider, has selected an IBM (News - Alert) technology to enable the company to support more clients while reducing energy usage by more than 65 percent.

Phase 2 offers solutions to a number of small and medium-sized business (SMB) clients. With its flexible SaaS (News - Alert) model, Phase 2 provides these companies access to high-end business software applications, including a wide range of cloud computing services such as email, customer relationship management, Web conferencing, and document management solutions.

As business grew with the addition of more clients, Phase 2 realized that the present Dell (News - Alert) blade server supporting its data center is nearing its maximum capacity. In order to accommodate the growing business data, Phase 2 needed a system that offered much more capacity than the present one.

Phase 2 selected IBM System x3850 M2 to replace its Dell servers, considering the capacity as well as energy efficiency. According to Phase 2, by using System x3850 M2, the company expects to lower its energy usage by more than 65 percent while increasing the capacity to support all of its clients in the same amount of space.

IBM System x3850 M2 is built on x-architecture, a design blueprint for Intel (News - Alert)-based servers. Its energy efficient design allows clients to support a large number of demanding business applications on a single server. With its greater flexibility, the system allows clients to easily expand their system from four sockets to 16 whenever required.

Phase 2 will run VMware on the System x3850 M2 as well as IBM System Storage N series, the company said.

“At the end of the day, Phase 2 is selling service,” said Kevin Doherty, CEO of Phase 2 International, in a statement. “The ability of our technology to scale along with the needs of our clients and provide them a good experience is directly tied to our success.”

“We're confident that our new IBM System x servers will grow along with our business, helping us to deliver unbeatable service and support to our clients,” added Doherty.

As part of its strategy to capture cloud computing opportunity, IBM is helping independent software vendors (ISVs) design, build, deliver and market cloud services, said Dave Mitchell, director of strategy, IBM Developer Relations. “Working with clients like Phase 2, IBM is helping to accelerate the shift from traditional on-premise-only computing to cloud computing.”
